A nice milestone timeline of what to do with your labrador as they are growing!
So many helpful information regarding Labradors and helpful resources for those that have spent years dedicating themselves to this wonderful breed and bettering the breed.
Many Labradors can be genetically prone to obesity and this article helps explain why.
There is no specific treatment for the POMC gene mutation in dogs, but you can help regulate your dog's weight by:
-
Managing their diet: Feed your dog smaller meals more frequently to help them feel full and avoid overeating. You can also try using puzzle toys or slow-feed bowls to slow down how fast they eat.
-
Exercising your dog: Make sure your dog gets enough exercise to maintain a healthy weight.
-
Tracking their weight: Monitor your dog's weight and body condition score to make informed decisions about their diet and exercise.
-
Using their food motivation: You can use your dog's high food motivation as a positive incentive during training. I recommend using your puppy's daily food as their training "treats" the first few months at home. Not only does this create an amazing bond as your puppy works for their daily food, it helps prevent them from gaining weight from too many calories from normal treats. Always remember if you are having a big training session with normal treats to cut back on their dog food that day to help balance out the calories.
-
Providing nutritious food: Make sure your dog has access to nutritious food to keep them satisfied.
